Frequently Asked Questions
Q. What should I use to clean and protect my soft top and vinyl soft goods?
A. Haartz, The manufacturer of the Jeep soft top fabric has approved a product called Raggtopp Protectant and Raggtopp Cleaner for the protection and cleaning of their fabrics. Please note that A regular program of keeping your soft top clean through regular washing BEFORE it gets dirty, will enhance the life and beauty of your Jeep® or SUV top and make successive cleaning and protecting easier.RAGGTOPP is a silicone-free, UV Blocking, non-aerosol formula for Jeep® and SUV Soft Tops. RAGGTOPP also contains NO Petroleum Distillates , Freon or chlorofluorocarbons and is Ozone friendly to meet California Air Quality Standards. It goes on easy and dries to a clean sheen, Unlike drying shinny silicone products. RAGGTOPP Protectant is A True Re-Water Repelling System.
Always wash
your top by hand, Never drive through an automatic car wash as this can
damage and scratch your soft vinyl windows. Automatic car washes also
can use harmful chemicals that can damage your soft top and windows. It
is recommended that you
use the Raggtopp Cleaner on
your soft top, a safe alternative is a gentle brand of dishwashing soap
(Ivory,Lux etc) and Luke warm water.
Properly formulated, the
vinyl coating itself does not promote mildew growth. However, mildew
may grow on dirt and other matter that is not removed from the top. For
these more stubborn cases, apply a solution of no more than ½ cup (4
oz.) bleach and ¼ cup (2 oz.) Raggtopp Cleaner per gallon of
water. Rinse thoroughly with cool to cold water. Please note that
excessive soaking with bleach solution can weaken seam threads. Rinse
the entire top to remove all of the bleach solution from the vinyl, and
rinse the car body to prevent streaking on painted, chrome or other
surfaces. Repeated cleanings may be necessary.
Q. How do I protect my soft top windows?
A: For tops that have zip out windows such as the Jeep Wrangler and Bestop Super Top Jeep Tops we recommend the Window Roll Bag by Clover Patch. The window Roll allows you to store and go your soft top's vinyl windows. The Window Roll's soft layers of felt material protect the windows while rolled gently in the bag. Vibration from the moving vehicle and the soft plastic windows rubbing against the soft felt will actually polish your windows while moving! A win win storage solution. Note: Windows should be stored clean and free of grit and dirt.
For those tops such as many of the Tiger Tops and STC tops that do not have Zip Out windows, We recommend that before you roll up your windows in place that you clean the windows inside and out so that no grit or rough surfaces are attached to the plastic glass. Before rolling up your window, place a soft terry towel or even newsprint, if a towel is not available, against the window glass and roll the glass with the towel or news print inside. This keeps the window glass from rubbing against itself and creating scratches if you missed some dirt or grit! This works friends, If you don't believe it, drive your Jeep to the beach on a windy day and spend the day there with those windows rolled up. When you roll them down to come home, You will not be able to see through them and usually they are damaged beyond repair. Minor scratches can be removed with a product from Jeep, called Jeep Soft Glass Cleaner This product will clean minor scratches and helps protect the window glass with a built in UV Protectant. Yellowing windows is a break down of the plastic polymer by Ultra Violet Rays. Once yellowed, there is no cure. Be sure to use The Jeep Soft Glass Cleaner to protect your windows from this harmful UV.
Q. Do the Dana Spicer axles that are for ABS applications come with the sensor ring installed?
A. Yes, All our Dana axles that are for ABS applications have the "Tone" sensor ring gear installed. In fact, many applications of the Dana axle are the same axle just without the sensor ring. In some cases Dana substitutes the ABS axle for the Non ABS axle. In this case you simply "knock" off the tone ring to use the axle in the non ABS application.
Q. How do I attach the Jeep Nerf Bars to my Jeep?
A. We recommend that ALL Nerf bars be tack welded to the frame by a professional installer. This is the ideal attachment method as it provides for a much more secure attachment for the bars and keeps the frame with the same structural integrity as the stock application. The alternative "Do it your Self install" is to position the Nerf bars to the frame, front to back and parallel with the side and bottom of body. Mark your holes with a center punch and drill 5/16” holes. Secure the bars with self tapping bolts. It is also handy to use two or more people when marking the positioning of the bars to frame for drilling.
Q. How do I know if I have a Flat Head (L) or Overhead Valve (F) engine in my old model Jeep?
A. Don't feel bad, this has confused folks from the beginning, because it is just opposite to what you think, but it is necessary to know to obtain the correct parts for your Jeep. Basically the easiest way to tell by a quick glance is that if you look at the top of the engine and you see spark plugs on top of the engine you have a FLAT head which is classified as an L head. If you see a valve cover on top then you have an Overhead Valve engine which is classified as an F head.
Q. I installed a new Fuel and Temp Gauge in my Jeep and they do not work, Why? Or how do I trouble shoot my gauges?
A. This can be a very complex answer and may require a call to our Jeep Specialist at Turner 4WD Parts. Basically the very first step before you even considering installing new gauges or working on on the old one is to DISCONNECT the battery cables. Electrical gauges are very sensitive to voltage arch's and an arch will destroy the gauges in the blink of the eye. The one safe wire you can check with voltage applied is the sending unit lines. In fact this is the factory recommended way to eliminate the gauge or sending unit as faulty. In case of both Temp and Fuel the following applies.
With voltage applied to the gauges pull the sending unit wire off the fuel or temp sender. When this wire is "Free Floating" not connected, The Fuel gauge should read EMPTY and or the Temp gauge should read COLD if the temp sender wire is pulled. Now take this sending unit wire and GROUND it on the frame or other GROUND metal object. Now the Fuel and or Temp gauge ,depending on the one being tested, should read full tilt FULL or HOT respectively. If the gauges react positively to this test then the SENDER is bad. If the gauges react negatively to this test, then the gauge('s) are bad. You could still have a bad sender, but until the gauges pass the above test there is no way to test the sender.
The Jeep CJ Fuel and Temp Gauges have undergone a couple of changes in the units since the original. The original Fuel gauge had three (3) post on the rear and the Temp had two posts on the rear. At some point Jeep discontinued this gauge and with the out cry from Jeep owners the gauge was brought back to Jeep again by Stewart Warner, however the design changed. The original gauges outside the cluster were ROUND. The new Bi-Torque design are actually RECTANGULAR outside the case. Once installed in the cluster they look the same from the outward appearance. This is where the similarities ended. The new design fuel gauge contained only two posts on the rear of the gauge necessitating a change in the wiring as well as a install change with the post actually attaching through the back of the case to the gauge. Here at Turner's we carry both the original design replacement gauges as well as the new design. We will be happy to assist you with answers to both designs.
